Six Nations Workforce Development Think Tank

Ohsweken (January 20, 2010) – On February 19, 20, 2010, the people of Six Nations will be asked to bring their minds together to discuss and strategize ways of developing Six Nations workforce. A healthy and well balanced workforce is an integral part of a community and is essential for its sustainability and the well being of its citizens. The term “Think Tank”, was selected as, in this case, it refers to a forum for fostering public interest and participation in human resource development.

A number of factors led up to the idea of holding a community think tank. The Six Nations/Haudenosaunee Labour Force Study conducted by GREAT in January, 2009 revealed Six Nations unemployment rate to be 25.3%. Unemployment in Six Nations was 17.3% higher than Ontario’s rate and 18.1% higher than Canada’s rate for the same month. Other factors leading up to the event include difficulties recruiting and staffing positions within Six Nations public and private sectors and the need by business owners for a skilled workforce to increase their competiveness with surrounding cities and towns.

“The idea of a community think tank evolved from informal discussions amongst our business owners, Six Nations Elected Council’s departmental staff and our concerns about the future well-being of our community”, said Elvera Garlow, Executive Director of GREAT. The event is being coordinated by GREAT in partnership with Grand River Post Secondary Education Office, Six Nations Elected Council Departments, Two Rivers Development Centre, and Six Nations Polytechnic. GREAT, Two Rivers Development Centre and Six Nations Elected Council are financially contributing towards the event.

The think tank will be held at Six Nations Polytechnic on Friday, February 19 and Saturday, February 20, 2010 beginning at 9:00 am. February 20th will be a repeat of the first day for those who are unable to attend on February 19th. Citizens of Six Nations living on and off reserve including youth, business owners, service providers, job seekers and the general public are invited to attend this important event. Pre-registration for this event is being recommended. Keynote Speaker Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos First Nation in British Columbia will share his experience creating a community economic development action plan. Chief Louie is widely recognized in Canada and the United States for his direct approach to economic development as the means for achieving social and economic self sufficiency.
