G.R.E.A.T.’s Targeted Wage Subsidy program provides work experience for Six Nations band members by providing wage subsidies to employers. Participants of this program must be unemployed and eligible for Employment Insurance benefits. Employers participating in this program receive up to 60% of the wages for their new employee up to a maximum of $8.00 an hour. This subsidy runs from 12-52 weeks in length dependent upon the skill level of the individual. Sheila (Hill) Styres is one of the Programs and Services Officers working on the Targeted Wage Subsidy program. Sheila explains that the program “ensures a commitment from the employer that there will be a full time position available at the end of the subsidized term”. Employees gain the advantage of training for a specific company in a field where work is available. This “foot-in-the-door” makes the participating employee as valuable to their employer as existing staff members. Employers also benefit from this program. Sunrise Manufacturing president Donna Dunham has participated in this program and says that “the wage subsidy allows the employer to hire new employees without the burden of expensive training costs”. Valuable training, guaranteed employment and work experience are some of the many benefits of the Targeted Wage Subsidy Program.
