G.R.E.A.T.’s Career Experience/Job Shadowing program offers Six Nations members the opportunity to learn about the many careers available in our community.  All Six Nations members are eligible provided that they are no longer required by law to attend school.  The program places participants in the work place of their choice for a maximum of six weeks.  During that time, they watch and study the routines of people employed in the field.

Ed Hannigan is a Programs and Services Officer at GREAT.  In his own words, Ed says that “the best part of working at GREAT is the opportunity to work with youth.  It’s like watching a precious flower blossom.” The Career Experience/Job Shadowing program is an excellent tool for helping our youth realize the importance of completing their grade 12 education.  As Ed says, “without grade 12, doors are closed.  Giving people a snapshot of a career allows them to make a decision as to whether this is a suitable environment or profession for them.  The experience addresses valuable questions like ‘Is it everything they expected it to be?’ ‘Do they have the skills to make the next step?’  From there they can decide on their next course of action”.

So what do participants gain from this program?  Knowledge about employment positions, the opportunity to collect information from people in the field, and contacts, are just a few of the advantages.  “85% of jobs are not advertised.  You get them through the side door, by reputation.” Says Hannigan.  Networking with people in the field is extremely valuable.  Past participants of the Career Experience/Job Shadowing program have earned jobs as a result of the program by first shadowing the position, then volunteering, and finally being hired as a full-time, paid employee.

For complete program information please visit the programs section of  www.greatsn.com or call G.R.E.A.T. to arrange an appointment with a Programs and Services Officer.
