"It's really busy and I like working in a high-paced environment," says Jordon Fraser, of her position as assistant coordinator in GREAT's student office. "It's not strictly a desk job where you're constantly typing away; you get to interact with students."

Interacting with students and helping youth find employment is a role that suits her. As a graduate of Mohawk College's two-year social services program and a student enrolled in McMaster University's social sciences program, Jordon enjoys being in a position to help fellow students. "All my experience has helped me get this job. Now I am helping other students get jobs," she says.

Student Office Coordinator and Jordon's Supervisor, Patty Davis is enjoying the extra help during the busy summer season. "She helps the Student Office function in a productive way assisting the parents, students, employers, community members who visit the GREAT Student Office," she says. Prior to her position with GREAT, Jordon held two summer placements as an employment counsellor trainee with the Grand River Post Secondary Education Office. "It was really high-paced and I loved working there, so when I read the GREAT job description I thought it would be similar."

Over the years she's experienced the ups and downs of searching for summer employment. But with GREAT's student office available to assist her she always found a position. "I was 16 when I got my first job through here. Just from that one experience it helped me get other jobs and I've been working every summer ever since." That is why she shares her struggles with other students. She hopes that

by sharing her experiences, she can give hope to youth who are struggling with their search.

Jordan's success has inspired her to encourage other students to take advantage of the services offered in the student office. "Having a program set up where people can access jobs makes it a lot easier," she explains. As well as helping youth locate jobs, Jordon spends time helping students put together resumes, cover letters, build references and enhance their interviewing skills. "It helps you prepare for when you're not eligible for the programs anymore, so you know what you need to do to get a job in the future," she says, adding that it's helpful to have somewhere local where students can access fax machines, computers and the Internet.

"Jordon’s work experience and knowledge of unity and what can be accomplished by working as a team are very beneficial to the student office," says Patty. Unity is exactly what helps students gain employment. By sitting down and collaborating on a resume, Jordon helps youth realize their skills. High school students often don't realize that extracurricular activities and volunteer work are excellent resume points.

GREAT's Resume/Cover letter workshops and Surviving the Interview tutorials can give students the confidence to work hard for exciting jobs. Jordon encourages youth to come in and refresh a tired old resume or create a first one. With extended summer hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, everyone has an opportunity to increase their job skills.

Summer is here and as you begin to enjoy its hot and lazy days, a small reminder: OSTTC will be open to continue helping you advance your knowledge. If you have some extra time or are looking for a break from the kids, a class might be just the thing you need. We offer a variety of courses. Some are only a couple of hours long while other courses will take a few days or weeks. Give us a call to find out details on any or all the courses we offer.

While you are still basking in the sun, remember, September will be here before you know it and time to register for the 25-week automotive technician course will have slipped through your fingers like the sand at the beach.

You don't have to be a motor head to join this course. Boys and girls alike can benefit from learning these skills. The course starts you with the basics and builds from that with textbook and practical knowledge. If you learn from experience and like to get your hands dirty, this is definitely the place for you. If you aren't interested in automotive but still want to learn some new skills, OSTTC offers other down and dirty courses as well. Landscaping, gas technician and welding, to name a few, can provide you with new and exciting skills.
